Rudolf Stingel (born 1956 in Merano, Italy) is a contemporary Italian conceptual artist renowned for his innovative approach to painting and installation art. Operating between New York and Merano, Stingel challenges traditional notions of authorship, materiality, and viewer engagement in art.
Stingel’s installations often transform exhibition spaces into immersive environments. Notably, he has covered gallery walls and floors with materials like carpet and Celotex insulation panels, inviting viewers to physically interact with the surfaces by drawing or writing on them. This participatory approach blurs the line between artist and audience, emphasizing collective creation over individual authorship.
Stingel’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale (1999, 2003, 2013), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. His art is held in numerous public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate Modern in London
