Katja Schenker

Eglesee

2024

As part of the 2020 public art competition for the new Bad Egelsee family and sports pool, six artists were invited to contribute site-specific works integrating the pool’s architectural form and the area’s topography. Schenker responded to the entryway’s unique “sunken” location and the concealed entrance behind existing buildings. Her sculpture, einsinken(“sink in”), was specifically designed to address these spatial and experiential elements.

Katja Schenker created a 1:100 scale architectural model of the site.
The model was then “pressed” into copper foil—a hands-on, bodily act mirroring her signature performative approach.
This foil-skin, bearing the imprint of buildings and terrain, was electroplated via galvanic bath into a rigid copper plate about 5 mm thick kunstbulletin.ch.

The final sculpture stands vertically at 216 × 134 × 20 cm, with a striking dual-tone patina—copper-red blending into turquoise-blue from oxidation kunstbulletin.ch.
Installed at the pool’s forecourt, einsinken signals the entrance while echoing the site’s urban and topographical identity.
